historic movie palaces in Connecticut, and create a performing arts

Connecticut, a region rich in geographic, economic, ethnic and cultural
diversity.
Today, The Garde owns and operates a complex of four adjacent buildings
in downtown New London, the centerpiece of which is the 1,472-seat
Garde Theatre, an historic movie/vaudeville house (1926). Built in 1926

Hygienic Art, Inc. was created as an incorporated structure in the fall of 1979, when artists employed by a federal Comprehensive Education and Training Act (CETA) grant decided, as a final project, to hold an outsiders' art festival. The show was modeled after the "Salon Des Independants," a late 19th century art movement in Paris in which artists had protested the aristocracy by exhibiting their works in cafes located in the 'seamy' areas of the city. The artists in those exhibitions gave rise to the great French Impressionist movement. The exhibition was presented at the Hygienic Restaurant, New London's only 24 hour eatery, which had been open since 1919. The rules were simple; no judge, no jury, no fees, no censorship, one piece per artist and all were welcome. The show was an immediate success and the Hygienic Art Exhibition became an annual creative arts festival, attracting over 450 artists and an audience of thousands. The Hygienic Restaurant closed in 1985 and the show continued in other historic venues in the city. Hygienic Art was formally incorporated in 1987 to save the exhibition from speculators who wanted to use the Hygienic name to promote other festivals in the city. In 1996 the building that housed the Hygienic Restaurant was slated for demolition to become a parking lot for a bank. Originally built as a whaling company's provisioning store and crews' quarters, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. Hygienic Art, Inc. led a statewide grassroots effort to save the building. Enlisting the support of the State's Attorney Generals Office, the Connecticut Historic Commission, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, City of New London, the Governor, State Legislators, the Connecticut Historic Commission, the Chester Kitchings Foundation, Community Foundation of S.E. Conn., Palmer/ Bodenwein Fund and thousands of private donors and volunteers, Hygienic Art bought and historically renovated this landmark building into a residential artists co-op and public art galleries. The building opened in January of 2000 for the 21st annual Hygienic Art Exhibition and stands as a testimony to community activism. Hygienic Art exists today as one of New London's premier community development projects and fine arts venue.
Events at the Art Park are always all ages; beer and wine are available for purchase for 21+; and most all events are by suggested donation.

O'Neill, The
(& Rose Barn Theater, Blue Gene's Pub)
305 Great Neck Road
Waterford, CT 06385
(860)443-5378
Founded in 1964 by George C. White and named in honor of America's only
Nobel Prize-winning playwright, The O'Neill is home to six distinct
programs: the O'Neill Playwrights Conference, Music Theater Conference,
Puppetry Conference, National Theater Institute, Critics Institute and
the Monte Cristo Cottage, O'Neill's childhood home located in
neighboring New London. At The O'Neill, writers and directors,
puppeteers and singers, students and audiences alike take their first
steps in exploring, revising and understanding their work and the
potential of the theater they help create.
The work of The O'Neill focuses on the script as it begins its journey
to the stage. The actors work with minimal props and no sets or
costumes, holding scripts in their hands, revealing for the first time
the magic of a new play or musical, puppetry piece or cabaret act. Work
first performed at The O'Neill has gone on to regional theaters,
Broadway, movies and television. Students and professionals who have
honed their skills at The O'Neill can be seen in these venues every day
across the country. Others work behind the scenes as playwrights,
directors, in stage management, publicity and a hundred other roles
that the public never sees but are nonetheless essential to every
production.
Staff and alumni from The O'Neill have won every major award in theater
arts. The O'Neill itself is the winner of a special Tony Award, the
National Opera Award, the Jujamcyn Award of Theater Excellence and the
Arts and Business Council Encore Award. The seven hundred plays and
musicals developed and premiered at The O'Neill include such notable
works as John Guare's THE HOUSE OF BLUE LEAVES, Brian Crawley and
Jeanine Tesori's VIOLET, Wendy Wasserstein's UNCOMMON WOMEN AND OTHERS,
August Wilson's MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM, FENCES and THE PIANO LESSON,
Lee Blessing's A WALK IN THE WOODS, NINE by Arthur Kopit, Mario Fratti
and Maury Yeston, AVENUE Q, IN THE HEIGHTS, and STORY OF MY LIFE.
The O'Neill Rose Barn is an iconic O’Neill building; the Rufus & Margo Rose Barn is original to the property and has a great rustic feel, with a spacious patio, water view and a 150 person capacity. The Barn has played host to dances, wine tastings, concerts, weddings and anniversariesis. The Rose Barn is known for their ever popular "Cabin Fever" series during the winter months which offers a variety of live rock, folk and americana bands throughout the northeast and beyond. The Cabin Fever series and other music events held at the barn are all ages and typically run 7 to 10pm for a suggested donation; beer and wine are available for purchase during the events.
The O'Neill Blue Gene's Pub is an actual working pub open to the public during the summer months and offers a serving area, small stage, and pub-style seating, as well as an outdoor patio.
