Matzah Cigar

Matzah Cigar is a progressive/rock jazz group with members hailing from all corners of New London county. Band members are Max Kelly of New London (guitar/vocals), Michael Albaine of Waterford (bass/keyboards/vocals/cello/kazoo), and Ben LaRose of Ledyard (percussion/vocals/bizarre sound effects). The group has been playing together since early 2008 and has produced original material that represents a wide array of influences, from the classic prog from such artists as Yes, Genesis, and King Crimson to the jazz-rock of Steely Dan to the schizophrenic, genre-defying stylings of Mr. Bungle. They are currently working on a debut album and are looking to promote themselves by playing more local shows. As Rick Koster put it in a 2008 article about the band, "[w]ith Jeff Beck-ish instrumentals, Herbie Hancock's “Chameleon,” and a batch of original material that fuses pop and fusion — Steely Dan and Frank Zappa leap to mind — [Matzah Cigar] goes light-years beyond the accomplishment level folks apparently expected when they plugged in and cranked up." The band is currently working on a debut album and is trying to book more local shows and develop a larger fanbase.
