New London, CT 06320
goldenstgallery@yahoo.com

Gregory Bowerman is just completing his second year as a resident artist at the Hygienic Co-operative. As a full time oil painter, the Hygienic has allowed Greg the opportunity to explore his painting as well as become involved in the local community. Greg is currently the coordinating artist for the New London Main Street Mural project, in conjunction with the Drop In Learn Center, an after school program for 7 to 13 year olds. They are executing murals in downtown New London. Greg is also the coordinator for New London's 3rd Annual Open Studio Tour, featuring the talents of over 60 artists and musicians that work, live, and/or support the arts in Downtown New London. In addition he operates the Golden Street Gallery, a local gallery that promotes local and emerging artists. Greg is also a participating artist in the Urban Artist Initiative (UAI) a state wide program sponsored by the Connecticut Commission on the Arts and the Department of Community Research.

Greg's paintings vary from realistic to abstract, focusing on utilizing color and form as a tool for developing concept and visual response. Greg enjoys painting visual responses based on literature, spirituality and self-reflection. His work has been included in juried exhibitions in Payersbach, Austria (hosted by Spiritual Artist Ernst Fuchs) and Dublin, Ireland. He has tackled subjects such as "The Celebration of Life" (displayed at the UCONN Health Center for 90 days) this double sided triptych stands seven feet tall and is eight feet wide when open. He has also made a series as a visual response to "The Epic of Gilgimesh" and his most recent body of work "Seduced by the Gods". Greg insists that his work is not illustrations or interpretations of the literature he refers to, however it is an individual visual response, depicting "How the stories made me feel as I read them."

Greg's work may me viewed at the "BRICK GALLERY", 10 Main Street, Essex, CT, New work every four weeks with a reception every third Thursday of the Month. His work may also be viewed in his work-in/live-in studio at 79 Bank Street, or in his portfolio at the Golden Street Gallery, 94 Golden Street, New London, CT. commissions accepted.

Statement:In trying to write an “artist” statement for my
first solo show I have decided it best to not and may
just ramble for a bit. I tried to word it to not sound like a
kook, I tried to dedicate it but always felt like I was
leaving someone out. So fuck it. These are paintings,
drawings, random ideas that I have had pop into my head
that I decided to put out in one way or another, All in all, I would like
to say thank you to the people who deserve it and to the music I listened
to while making all of this. A special thank you goes out to Denny and Cristin for making all this possible.

And then there was Knucklegrease

Photographic Art. I have spent the last year or maybe more reflecting on my work over the thirty or so years I have been shooting. It is, at times, surprising and then not surprising at all that the actual images over the last years have been reflections. Why? I will let you know when I am sure. As a young artist there is so much new information to learn and teachers to please. Accepting that an image is cool is enough to make you strive to create more. There is no Why, just on to the next assignment. At what point do you become an artist? How does one define the soul of an artist? My work, I hope, stimulates thought. I hope that my writing does also. I try not so much to offer answers, but to offer questions. Why? The more often you ask Why, the more you will force yourself to see an array of solutions, not just what is convenient or what provides the most instant gratification. The big picture isn't seen very much, but as an artist I take more time to see beyond the convenient. Marketing is about convenience. There are lots of conversations on the internet, coffeehouses and bars about the newest equipment. "If I just had this new tool I'd take better photos." Why? Because it says so in the ad. When I was in elementary school {late 50s} we took a class trip to a nuclear power plant. We were told that by the time we were our parent?s age that electricity would be almost free. So what does this have to do with Photographic Art? The most important tool you have is your mind and the more you allow it to ask why the better it will work.
