Backstage Pass (former El-N-Gee) <br> [Bar & Club]
Backstage Pass (former El-N-Gee)
[Bar & Club]
86 Golden Street
New London, CT. 06320
Owner Manager: Greg
Booking: Katie (860)444-2123

Hours: Open nights; 21+ on most nights, all ages shows are advertised per event

(Located 2 blocks from The Oasis Pub, in the center of downtown)

Ok, so here's the scoop: This club re-opened as The Backstage Pass in February 2008. Closed in late spring 2008. It re-opened yet again in July 2008 during Sailfest for a second attempt at a different lineup of management... still The Backstage Pass. Currently October 2008, they are undergoing yet another name change to "The Jinx". I think. The old El-N-Gee sign is on the outside of the building, the backstage pass sign is over the stage inside, and the Jinx is on their website. Confusing? Even if you don't know what to call it... (just call it the gee like us locals still do), things are at least, if anything, looking up. Shows are starting to be booked again, (contact phone number above to book a show!), and it seems as though there is life yet again in the once "El-N-Gee" building! Stay tuned to our listings for all the latest events & happenings at The Backstage Pass, er, The Jinx... or the former El-N-GEE!!!

It’s a decent sized room and has a fantastic stage, a great sound system, AWESOME lights… it even has a fog machine! Seriously one of the best stages in our county! Jimmy takes care of the bands that play this club – he makes you feel at home, and he loves music and supporting up and coming bands. This club is an asset to the New London County music scene! Today, The Garde owns and operates a complex of four adjacent buildings in downtown New London, the centerpiece of which is the 1,472-seat Garde Theatre, an historic movie/vaudeville house (1926). Built in 1926 during the golden era of the motion pictures and vaudeville theatres, the recently restored Moroccan interior of the Garde Theatre, along with the new seats and state-of-the-art stage equipment, provide a very audience-friendly theatre venue in a warm and beautiful atmosphere. Today the Garde is becoming nationally recognized for its unique architecture and multi-faceted programming.

Hygienic Art, Inc. was created as an incorporated structure in the fall of 1979, when artists employed by a federal Comprehensive Education and Training Act (CETA) grant decided, as a final project, to hold an outsiders' art festival. The show was modeled after the "Salon Des Independants," a late 19th century art movement in Paris in which artists had protested the aristocracy by exhibiting their works in cafes located in the 'seamy' areas of the city. The artists in those exhibitions gave rise to the great French Impressionist movement. The exhibition was presented at the Hygienic Restaurant, New London's only 24 hour eatery, which had been open since 1919. The rules were simple; no judge, no jury, no fees, no censorship, one piece per artist and all were welcome. The show was an immediate success and the Hygienic Art Exhibition became an annual creative arts festival, attracting over 450 artists and an audience of thousands. The Hygienic Restaurant closed in 1985 and the show continued in other historic venues in the city. Hygienic Art was formally incorporated in 1987 to save the exhibition from speculators who wanted to use the Hygienic name to promote other festivals in the city. In 1996 the building that housed the Hygienic Restaurant was slated for demolition to become a parking lot for a bank. Originally built as a whaling company's provisioning store and crews' quarters, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. Hygienic Art, Inc. led a statewide grassroots effort to save the building. Enlisting the support of the State's Attorney Generals Office, the Connecticut Historic Commission, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, City of New London, the Governor, State Legislators, the Connecticut Historic Commission, the Chester Kitchings Foundation, Community Foundation of S.E. Conn., Palmer/ Bodenwein Fund and thousands of private donors and volunteers, Hygienic Art bought and historically renovated this landmark building into a residential artists co-op and public art galleries. The building opened in January of 2000 for the 21st annual Hygienic Art Exhibition and stands as a testimony to community activism. Hygienic Art exists today as one of New London's premier community development projects and fine arts venue.

Oasis Pub
[Bar & Club]
16 Bank Street
New London, CT. 06320
Owner/manager: Brian S.
Booking: Sean Murray
(860) 447- 3929

(Located at the beginning of Bank Street near Union Plaza Train Station)

A favorite neighborhood bar… a music venue with some of the best original national & regional music around… and a bar featuring an ever-changing lineup of 20 tap beers! Brian is the manager of The Oasis Pub; Sean Murray handles booking and running shows/events. Sean is best known for founding the New London indie rock festival - “I Am Festival”. You can contact Sean about booking right from the Oasis profile, which is listed below. Feel free to also send a press kit/CD straight to the club for Sean.

The Oasis is very diverse as far as what music events are held there -- from indie, folk, rock to metal, ska, DJ's, electro/synth, goth, bluegrass, country & MORE! They also offer dance nights with local DJ's every Wed & Thurs night.

It’s a much smaller club, with a very dim lounge-like atmosphere & local art on the walls. Us locals like it because it’s “cozy”, and it always “seems packed” even if there are only 15 people there. It has a unique stage, a good PA, and brand new lighting. It's probably the most popular place for shows amongst us locals... you can find a good crowd there pretty much every night of the week. The Oasis is definitely “the hot spot” of New London. The Oasis is strictly a bar, 21+ only.

(Located along the Thames River, a bit off of the main downtown drag, about a mile from The Bank Street Café)

Stash’s is a music venue, a sports bar, and a restaurant all wrapped up into one! Stash's offers big screen TV’s, pool tables, 2 separate bars, an outside patio and AMAZING food! They host live music every weekend....local rock & jam bands, as well as cover bands & karaoke. Stash’s has a large capacity room, and a really awesome PA. It is a bit off the main drag from downtown, but Stash's stands on it's own with out of this world food and entertainment. During the day, (restaurant hours), Stash’s is open to all ages with guardians, but during shows and events, (typically after 5 pm), Stash’s is strictly a bar, 21+.
